Can Somatic Therapy Be Done Online?
(Short answer: Yes—and it can be powerful.)
When people hear “somatic therapy,” they often picture in-person work—maybe lying on a mat, breathwork in a softly lit room, or hands-on support from a therapist gently guiding the body. So it makes sense that one of the most common questions I get is:
“Can somatic therapy really work over Zoom?”
The answer is yes. And not only can it work—it can actually be incredibly effective, especially when done with intention and care.
Let’s talk about why.
First, What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is an approach that helps you reconnect with the messages, sensations, and wisdom of your body. “Soma” means body, and this kind of therapy brings your physical and emotional experiences together.
Instead of just talking about your stress, we might notice:
Where it lives in your body
How it shows up (tight shoulders, shallow breathing, a sense of heaviness)
What your body needs to feel safe again
Somatic therapy can include practices like grounding, breathwork, mindfulness, movement, visualization, and body-based awareness techniques.
But don’t worry—you don’t need to be a yogi or meditate perfectly. It’s not about doing it “right.” It’s about being present, moment by moment, with what’s actually going on inside you.
But Can That Happen Virtually?
Yes. While virtual somatic therapy is a little different than in-person work, it can be just as effective—and in some cases, even more so.
Here’s why.
1. Your Body Is With You—Wherever You Are
You don’t need to be in the same room with a therapist to notice your breath. You don’t need a studio to feel your heart racing or your jaw clenching. Somatic therapy meets you where you are—literally and emotionally.
In fact, for many clients, being in their own space (home, office, even outside in the backyard) creates a sense of comfort and safety that enhances the work.
2. Virtual Sessions Support Integration Into Daily Life
Somatic awareness doesn’t live in a therapy room—it lives in your real life.
When you practice grounding, nervous system regulation, or emotion-body awareness at home, you’re more likely to integrate those skills into daily rhythms. The space you heal in becomes the space you live in.
It’s not just a “therapy thing.” It becomes your thing.
3. Your Body Leads—Not the Screen
Even in virtual work, the therapist isn’t “fixing” you. We’re guiding you back into connection with your body—your sensations, your patterns, your internal signals.
This might include:
Naming what sensations are present in this moment
Exploring where certain emotions show up in your body
Tracking shifts in energy or tension
Using gentle movements, breath, or grounding tools
You don’t need a fancy office to do this work. You just need a quiet moment, some curiosity, and a therapist who can hold space—virtually or otherwise.
4. Safety Can Feel More Accessible at Home
Some clients—especially those healing from trauma—find it easier to relax and go deeper when they’re in their own environment. You can have your blanket, your tea, your favorite chair. You can light a candle or stretch on the floor. You’re in control of your space.
That sense of control can help the nervous system soften, making somatic work more approachable.
What Online Somatic Therapy Might Look Like
Not sure what to expect? Here's a snapshot of what might happen in a virtual session:
🌀 You share what’s coming up emotionally, relationally, or physically.
🌿 We pause to notice how your body is experiencing it—tightness in the chest, a flutter in the belly, tension in your jaw.
🌬️ We explore gently, using breath, imagery, grounding, or even small movements to process and release.
🧠 We reflect together—without judgment—on what your body might be trying to communicate.
And you always have permission to say, “I’m not sure,” or “That feels like too much right now.” Consent and collaboration are central to the work.
When Virtual Somatic Therapy Really Shines
Virtual somatic therapy may be especially supportive if you:
Struggle with anxiety or panic and feel safer in your own space
Have chronic illness or pain and prefer not to travel
Are neurodivergent and need control over sensory input
Are recovering from trauma and benefit from consistent grounding
Live in a rural area or in a state (like Texas!) where in-person options are limited
Have a busy schedule and need flexible access to care
Your body doesn’t care about the platform—it cares about connection.
You Can Heal Without Leaving Home
If you’ve been curious about somatic therapy but unsure if it can “work” online—I hear you. The hesitation is valid. But so is your ability to connect with your body, release what’s been stuck, and build new patterns of regulation and resilience… even through a screen.
This work is gentle, powerful, and tailored to you. No two bodies are the same—and your therapy shouldn’t be either.
